The time has come for me to begin my reviews of my latest trip to Morocco and Spain. Get excited! First up is the first meal I had in Fes, Morocco at Restaurant Sekaya. Our group was staying at Pension Sekaya so it only made sense that they would recommend their restaurant for dinner. It turned out that Restaurant Sekaya was not only conveniently located close to our place but also conveniently priced, serving up food at more affordable prices than many other restaurants in Fes’s medina. They also give their diners typical Moroccan bread called khobz along with several dips and spreads.
Being the somewhat adventurous eater that I am, I decided to forgo eating tagine as my first meal, which I was already familiar with, and went with the more intriguing pastilla. Pastilla is like a pastry and a meat pie combined. Phyllo-like dough is filled with chicken or pigeon meat but pigeon meat is used less often these days. I honestly have no idea what I ate but I’m going to go with chicken. On top of the pastilla is a dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon. It’s just as sweet as it is savory, giving it a very interesting taste. It’s like having your entree and dessert at the same time!
To end the meal, my group decided to enjoy some thé de menthe, or mint tea. This was the first of many mint teas throughout my trip but also the best! It was already sweetened, not too much but just enough, and came stuffed with mint leaves. Had I known all the other mint teas I had afterwards would not be as good (perhaps with the exception of the mint tea I had at a spa in Marrakech), I would have had 10 of these babies:
Another great perk of Restaurant Sekaya is its rooftop dining option, which allows you to enjoy the Fez air and perhaps some stray cats wandering by.
