Wahaca: Some Darn Good Mexican

This visit has been a long time coming. Many, many months ago a friend of mine recommended Wahaca to me, a Mexican market restaurant with several locations in London. I neglected to follow her orders. A few months after that another friend of mine declared Wahaca some of the best Mexican food she’s had in London (and she’s from California). Again, I neglected to go. Around the same time my internship manager also mentioned Wahaca and its deliciousness, even suggesting we go one day for lunch. Alas, it did not happen.

Well, the time finally came. My mom was recently in London and I took her to what I had heard was a great Mexican place with a long wait. I can now confirm both of these things are true. The two of us ventured to Wahaca on a Saturday night and, after approximately an hour wait, we were seated with recommendations from our waitress and a bowl of chips and guac in front of us. Also in my hand was Wahaca’s classic margarita, the perfect accompaniment to our Mexican meal. So far, so good. So very, very good.

After some deliberation, my mom and I decided to try items that we wouldn’t normally find on your typical Mexican restaurant menu. Part of what makes Wahaca so interesting is the way they serve their food. If you’re feeling really hungry you can go for the bigger plates, or if you’re in the mood to share, they have smaller street food dishes that are served tapas style. My mom and I loved the tapas idea and picked three dishes that seemed unique but tasty: pork pibil tacos, ceviche tostadas and new potato taquitos. All of them were fantastic but the latter two really stood out to me. First of all, they were so different. The ceviche was made with a mix of shrimp and scallops tossed with habaneros, lime, mint and salsa. I loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. As for the new potato taquitos, stuffed with potatoes, lettuce, feta cheese and habanero salsa, this is another dish I highly recommend. I would never think to put potatoes and feta cheese in a taquito but I’m so glad Wahaca had that genius idea.

I have to admit, even just writing this post has me craving Wahaca ASAP. I’m sure I’ll be satisfying my craving soon.
